Built around 1900 the hotel was originally a fishing retreat for the Strathnaver family. Around 1930s it transformed to a hotel. The Ben Loyal Hotel is located in the centre of Tongue next door to the Royal Bank of and it is only a short stroll to the post office and shop and a few minutes from the general store and petrol station. The hotel enjoys outstanding views out over the unspoiled Sutherland landscape and is the perfect place from which to explore the northern highlands. From here you can witness the difference between the 'flow country' of Caithness with its sweeping landscapes and open skies and the rugged scenery with spectacular mountains and glens that typifies so much of north Sutherland.So if you are looking for a place to rest your head for the night after the long journey north or a base for a longer holiday in the area then the Ben Loyal will offer you a sanctuary from the stresses and strains of modern living. Many of the rooms enjoy outstanding views out over the Kyle of Tongue Ben Loyal Ben Hope and the ruin of Castle Varrich which sits on the hill line opposite the hotel.
