Its ivy clad turrets commanding hilltop position and sense of solid indomitability at first suggest a medieval stronghold. Yet the history of Bodelwyddan is altogether more benign. For it was the intention of the Victorians in 1830 not to raise a fortress but to display a family's wealth as visibly and romantically as possible. And you're part of a fairytale from the moment you cross Bodelwyddan's Gothic threshold. Look out for the Jacobean-style staircase the medieval weaponry in the entrance hall the sculpture gallery with its stunning vaulted ceiling and the original marble chimneypiece dating from 1700. Fairytale Bodelwyddan Castle is packed with things to do it's attached to the National Portrait Gallery's inventive museum the Victorian Collection. There is croquet and other indoor and outdoor facilities including pool and health suite and a four rink indoor Bowls complex. Bodelwyddan Castle sits within the heartstopping scenery of the Welsh Clwydian Hills in 200 acres of scenic parkland. Look out for the unique First World War practice trenches!
