Built next to a 17th century Inn on the banks of the Teign estuary the hotel offers a (modern) comfortable atmosphere whether your stay is for business or pleasure. There has been a hostelry on the site since Roman times. It was the site of a tidal ford and travellers would arrive and wait to cross the river. The hostelry became known as the passage way' across the river now the Passage House. In later years a granite railway was built to link the quarries on Dartmoor with the Stover Canal shipping granite which was used on many of London's famous buildings. Also china clay was mined locally and shipped out via the Hackney Canal. The river was a hive of activity with the Lightermen and Barge's working the estuary and canals. The ruins of their cottages are still to be seen on the banks of the river along from the Inn. We are perfectly situated as a base to explore the delights of Devon from the towering red sandstone cliffs and sheltered sandy coves with beautiful bays along the coastline to the contrast of the wild and rugged terrain of Dartmoor.The hotel offers a very attractive and relaxing leisure suite with a Steam Room Sauna and well appointed Gym. Our Beauty Salon offers a range of treatments massage and aromatherapy. For coffee and that informal meet the Vue terrace and conservatory offers stunning views of the estuary. Our Lightermans Restaurant offers table d'hote' and a la carte' menus making the best use of local produce. For a more informal dining experience (or as an alternative) you can dine at the Inn which offers an excellent Carvery and an extensive menu from a sandwich to succulent steaks and fish. Cayton House is a four star ( Visit Britain ) bed and breakfast. The bedrooms have recently been refurbished and we endeavor to provide the style and standards of a quality Hotel with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Stuart and Joanne will offer you a warm welcome and will do all we can to make sure your stay is special.There are two double rooms ( with king size beds ) and a single or twin room. The double rooms have ensuite shower rooms. The beds have quality feather and down duvets and cotton rich bedding. The breakfast menu offers you a wide choice including - full English; Muffin eggs and bacon; smoked haddock and egg; continental; omelettes; home-made pancakes ( plain with berries American- style or banana and ice cream ); and mock crab. We use quality products with bacon sausages and eggs being sourced from the local organic farm. We are located a few minutes walk from the lovely beaches of Paignton. Paignton is situated in the middle of the bay with beautiful Torquay to the left and the fishing town of brixham to the right.Upon arrival you will receive a complimentary home made cream tea.As we are a small family run bed and breakfast we do not take cards for payment and would kindly ask guests to send a deposit cheque to confirm the booking ( if booking is well in advance ).
